AARP National Legal Training Project

An AARP Foundation Program

The National Legal Training Project (NLTP) trains lawyers and other advocates throughout the country in substantive law and advocacy skills to enhance their free and reduced fee services to older Americans. NLTP also conducts “Training of Trainers” programs to produce a cadre of elder law trainers who expand the reach of the program. The program’s funding sources include the US Administration on Aging, AARP and private contributions.

Important Economic Stimulus Check Information
Instructions and 1040 form for those who do not normally file a tax return

As many of you know, the Economic Stimulus Payment passed by Congress is now hitting the airwaves regarding who should file and who is eligible. An IRS mailing will be sent in late March to people who generally do not file tax returns -- certain recipients of Social Security and Veterans Affairs benefits -- explaining what they will need to do to receive their one-time payment and providing the necessary guidance and forms to file.

We have put together a package that will be helpful to you and your community partners to assist individuals who are not otherwise required to file a federal tax return, but who must now file a return to receive the economic stimulus payment.

This package contains the following:

1. Economic Stimulus Payment Fact Sheet
2. The Easy Guide to Getting Your Economic Stimulus Payment
3. Sample 1040A Form-Stimulus Payment Form
4. Get Your Economic Stimulus Payment Safely and Securely

These items will give you a good understanding of the Economic Stimulus Payment and some basic steps to take to help assist individuals in receiving their payment. There is plenty of time to file the “Stimulus Only 1040A Forms”. The deadline will be sometime in the fall of 2008, likely October 15, 2008. The deadline for these returns is not April 15! If taxpayers need additional assistance, they can go to an AARP Tax-Aide site. Most are open until April 15, 2008. Find a site near you at www.aarp.org/taxaide or call 1-888-227-7669.

At www.aarp.org/taxaide, on behalf of program participants, you can also find helpful information and even ask specific tax and stimulus payment related questions to an IRS-certified AARP Tax-Aide volunteer online. This service is available 12 months a year, 24 hours a day. Answers will be emailed back to you within a few days. You can also go to www.irs.gov or call 1-800-829-1040 for IRS assistance or to find an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC) near you. TACs are open past April 15.

Advance Directives: Living Wills and Health Care Powers of Attorney
Help yourself and your loved ones by ordering a free guide today

Advance Directives such as a Living Will and a Health Care Power of Attorney are used to communicate your wishes when you are unable to do so due to illness or injury. Every adult, young or old, should have an advance directive; they are easy to create and they help your family and doctors know what your wishes are for medical treatment. NLTP has a self-help advance directive booklet specific to every state in the U.S. "Planning for Incapacity" booklets explain the differences between the two types of advance directives, provide detailed instructions on creating valid directives under the law of the state where you live, and include state-specific advance directive forms.

Click on the link for "Community Education" on the left of this page to learn more and to order your "Planning for Incapacity" booklet.
